The StreamSafely anti-piracy advocacy initiative by the US-based Cable Television Association for Marketing (CTAM) launched a mini-site dedicated to programming for the 2023 holiday season. The site includes a collection of 107 movies curated by Common Sense Media.

CTAM and Common Sense Media list sites and apps that offer holiday content legally for each of the coming American holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year; as well as a Kids Viewing Guide.  It also includes a StreamSafely Holiday Checklist, a parents guide with resources and practices for consumers to reduce piracy-related risks.

Recommended sites include Disney+, Max, Paramount+, Netflix, and more. “Jingle all the way to a happy holiday season by finding where to stream the top movies for children, families, and viewers of all ages now!” said CTAM.

An October 2022 study by CTAM found that 38% of households with kids report accessing pirated content a few times a year, well above the mean for the US adult population overall (26%).  Between 2020 and 2022, the number of adults who said they had “definitely not visited” a pirated content site dramatically decreased from 34% to 19%, according to CTAM.

Why it matters

According to a study by Effectv quoted by CTAM, 92% of American households tune in to holiday programming from Thanksgiving to Christmas; with a 46% increase in streaming viewershipo on top holiday networks.  Households watch an average of 20 hours of holiday programming.

“We want to help ensure your holiday streaming is safe and enjoyable, and that means avoiding dangerous and illegal sites and platforms. To help celebrate, our partners at SmartMove compiled the best movies for a multitude of holidays, and where you can stream them,” said CTAM.
