The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a warning to Android TV set-top box suppliers not to misuse the labels that are applied to these devices after they pass certification; and that a device’s certification does not cover the use of these devices for illegal streaming.

In Malaysia, devices are labeled both by MCMC and by SIRIM the company which performs the certification (formerly known as the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia; which is owned by the country’s government).

Why this matters

The Malaysia government recognizes that consumers place their trust in device certifications, and want to ensure that non-certified devices are seen for what they are: fraudulent illicit streaming devices (ISDs).

Authorities have made multiple arrests against buying and selling of ISDs, and mulitple cases have gone to trial, resulting in fines.
