Managers of Spain’s biggest free streaming websites acquitted of piracy

“A Spanish judge has ruled that hugely popular video streaming sites seriesyonkis.com, peliculasyonkis.com and videosyonkis.com ‘only posted links to other websites but didn’t actually upload any copyrighted video content’.

“One association of audiovisual producers had estimated the damages they caused to rights holders at more than 500 million euros ($565 million) and prosecutors had sought a two-year jail sentence against the four defendants, as well as fines and compensation.”

Why it matters: Since pirate devices and services rely on embedded hyperlinks to relay pirated content to end users, some pirates may see this decision as permission to steal.
