“Malware researchers discovered a new malicious campaign for Android devices that replaces legitimate apps with tainted copies built to push advertisements or hijack valid ad events.”
Android applications hardcoded in the malware were shown to include several video services.
Why it matters: Often, app developers will re-use software components that they find in online repositories. TV app developers targeting Android or any other device environment should closely inspect their code before releasing them to their users, to make sure that they haven’t inadvertently included pointers to malicious actors.
Consumers should always inspect the comments about any app before installing it on their devices. Low rankings or absence of comments should immediately make the app suspect.
