Poland: Police charge, detain 44-year-old for illegally sharing pay TV

Bydgoszcz municipal police fighting economic and corruption crimes detained a 44-year-old man involved in illegal sharing of pay TV subscriptions.  

According to a report by Police.pl, police officers from the Department for Combating Economic Crime and Corruption of the City Police Headquarters in Bydgoszcz discovered that the 44-year-old was making the rights of legitimate TV subscribers available to unauthorized persons who used prohibited devices to receive satellite television channels. A resident of Bydgoszcz had provided full monthly digital TV packages worth about PLN 150 for PLN 20-30, which gave an average of about PLN 250 for the whole year.

Police inspected two premises in the Pod Skarpą housing estate in Bydgoszcz, where officers seized three decoders, seven portable drives for card operation, eleven digital TV cards, portable adapters, a router with a power supply, laptops, card readers with digital TV cards with cables, a USB drive, a tablet and mobile phones, which will be used as evidence in the case.

This offense is punishable by up to 3 years’ imprisonment.  An expert in the field of computer forensics and a representative of the injured digital platform were present during the activities.

Why it matters

Polish law enforcement said that in addition to being illegal to share pay TV content, consumers of illegally distributed programming also bear criminal liability.  Police said that the matter is of a developing nature” “We already know that the catalog of people and deeds will be broader.”
