Travel alert: About those airport charging stations…

This is only slightly off-topic for Piracy Monitor but posted as a public service.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office posted a warning this month that USB charging stations for mobile devices at airports and other places frequented by travelers could infect your devices with malware.

An article in the Washington Post (paywall) suggests using a “USB condom,” which blocks the data communications conductors in the USB connector.

Why it matters

This is another violation of public trust by bad actors, which could harvest personal information that includes log-in IDs and passwords to media, financial, and other personal accounts. If you’re going to charge your device while on the road, connect it from a trusted source, such as an AC outlet.
