As part of a project commissioned by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) asked PwC Consulting LLC to estimate the amount of damage caused by piracy of Japanese content distributed online (download, streaming, etc.).
Financial damage caused by piracy in 2022 was between ¥1.95 and 2.2 trillion. This was about five times higher than the estimate from the previous survey in 2019, estimating the damage at between ¥3.33 billion and ¥4.3 billion.
The study first calculated and estimated the content market size and growth rate by five regions (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa) for the four media (genres) of video, publishing, music, and games, and estimated global market for legally-distributed content to be about ¥98 trillion in 2021.
