About 16% of Swedish consumers accessed illegal IPTV services at 2024’s year-end, which was up from 580,000 or 13% that it reported in March. The conclusion was based on research gathered through an online survey in the Nordic countries by Mediavision, a Stockholm-based media consultancy and research firm, reported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
Mediavision Senior Analyst Natalia Borelius told that journal that among the Nordic countries, piracy was most prevalent in Sweden. The reasons are nothing new: availability of high-speed broadband services, and, in her opinion, price increases for premium sports programming.
Sweden’s government is in the process of reviewing its national film policies, including the potential need for directives against piracy.

Why it matters
In the Nordics the growing piracy phenomenon poses a significant challenge especially to Sweden’s media market leading to substantial revenue losses, and undermining content rights.
