MultiChoice, Africa’s largest media company, launched a consumer awareness campaign in the Matabeleland region of Zimbabwe, urging Zimabweans subscribing to its South Africa DStv service to switch to the local version of the service.  The campaign, called DStv ZIMnandi, is positioned as a booster to creative talent within Zimbabwe.

“ZIMnandi is a through-the-line mass media campaign designed to raise awareness and highlight the advantages of subscribing locally. Our call to action is simple: switch to DStv Zimbabwe, because local is better,” said Jemsana, in a speech delivered on his behalf by MultiChoice Zimbabwe Head of Marketing, Brightwell Manyerenyere; as reported by The Herald Online of Zimbabwe.

MultiChoice has implemented several consumer incentives to get Zimbabwean subscribers to the South Africa DStv service to switch over, including waiver of a reconnection fee and multiple payment options through online payment platforms, credit card companies, partnered banks and MultiChoice service resellers.  It also has been running popular series programming and expanding partnerships with local broadcasters.

According to local reporting, MultiChoice Zimbabwe grew by more than 30% in 2024.  In September 2025, MultiChoice Group became majority-owned by the France-based media conglomerate CANAL+.  MultiChoice Group is parent company to Irdeto, a leading provider of video entertainment and service protection technologies.

Why it matters

While the campaign carries consumer messaging, it also is aimed at reducing piracy, since content licensed or intended for distribution in South Africa may be restricted in other countries.  In addition to this campaign, MultiChoice Zimbabwe runs ongoing consumer awareness campaigns in partnership with the country’s national arts council.
