Swedish media consultancy Mediavision reported that Viaplay, the Sweden-based media producer and distirbutor of TV programming and films, has announced a crackdown on account sharing, although its implementation will be gradual.
Viaplay technology will enforce new rules that will allow users to watch multiple movies, series programs or sporting events con multiple devices, as long as no two devices are accessing the same program at the same time.
Users wishing to access the service from another household must log in from that household.
Viaplay’s programming is available to US consumers through Amazon Prime Video, Comcast Xfinity, Roku and Xumo.
Danish producers cry foul
Several Danish production companies are claiming that YouSee has been distributing their TV shows and films without permission or payment since April 2023, after failing to reach new agreements. The boycott was suggested by Zentropa and Crone Film, among others, and is supported by several industry groups. YouSee is one of Denmark’s largest TV distributors.
