The Intelligence Response Team of Nigeria’s Force Intelligence Bureau arrested the operator of score808.com.ng, a domain known for streaming MultiChoice SuperSport content, which drew more than 1.2 million visitors from within Africa and at least 3.1 million visitors worldwide.  The arrest took place in August, in Osogbo, Osun State.

According to MultiChoice, the investigation leading to the arrest took place over several months, as the operator frequently changed locations.  Police had built a substantial base of evidence, and the suspect remains in custody.  If convicted, the suspect could face up to five years in prison.

Why it matters

In a prepared statement, MultiChoice reminds us of the extensive impact of piracy, beyond the initial act of copyright infringement: “Online streaming piracy is not only a criminal offence but also poses significant risks to customers. Users who access pirated content are often exposed to malware, phishing attacks, and other cybersecurity threats that can compromise their personal information.

“Additionally, by engaging with illegal streams, customers inadvertently contribute to the erosion of the creative industry, undermining the livelihoods of thousands of people involved in content production and distribution,” said MultiChoice.
