After a request from 1190 Sports, a member of the Alliance Against Audiovisual Piracy (Alianza), Peru’s National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI) ordered the country’s internet providers to block access to 128 websites that were illegally broadcasting sports events.
The sites were infringing copyright of the League 1 of the Peruvian football league and undermining distribution agreements by 1190 Sports.
INDECOPI responded by issuing a precautionary measure requiring internet service providers to block websites that stream sports events without a license, in violation of the law. The ISPs receiving the blocking notice included Entel, Claro, Movistar, Bitel, WI-NET Telecom S.A.C., Fiberlux S.A.C., GTD Perú S.A. and WOW Tel S.A.C.
Currently, Uruguay’s Regulatory Unit of Communication Services (URSEC) has the authority to allow live sports rights holders to directly approach internet providers and request the immediate blocking of websites that illegally broadcast their content.
